Temple of Apollo in the Stourhead Estate near Wiltshire, southwest England. The massive (11 km squared) Estate includes a Palladian mansion, the village of Stourton, farmland, gardens, and woodland.
The barons of Stourton lived in the Stourhead Estate for over 700 years before it was sold to the Hoare family in 1717; and Henry Hoare bequeathed the entire Estate to the National Trust after the death of his only son during World War I. The Temple was dedicated to Apollo on theory that the “sun god” would assist in the growth of the gardens.
